People might be surprised just how much running occurs over the course of a basketball game. One study of high school basketball player Kris Jenkins found the player to have covered 4.94 miles over the course of 31 minutes played. Tavon Blackmon and Amanda Fioravanti, meanwhile, covered 6.1 and 4.53 miles over 32 and 27 minutes, respectively.
It should be noted that each of these players ran between .6 and 1.3 miles during a pregame warm up, with both distance covered and time played included in the final tallies. Even with this amendment, people may find it interesting to learn that high school players seem to outpace their NBA counterparts.
During the 2017-2018 National Basketball Association season, players averaged 2.55 miles per game. Point guard Jrue Holiday, playing for the New Orleans Pelicans, led the league at 2.8 miles per game. Of course, the intensity levels are much higher during an NBA game compared to high school basketball, with professional basketball players burning as many as 1,000 calories in 20 minutes of playing time. Holiday averaged 36.1 minutes per game during the 2017-2018 season, burning more than 1,800 calories per game.
