As reported in Grocery Dive, digital and medical technology advances are driving a strengthened connection between health and food among today’s consumers. With nutrition labeling programs and recipe recommendations a traditional pathway for groceries to interact with consumers, many are now using app-based platforms to offer dietary guidance and food scoring relevant to all the items within the store.

“Good For You,” a program of Schnuck Markets introduced in 2022, monitors participant receipts and provides practical ideas for product swaps, as well as member discounts for healthy offerings. This approach enables Schnucks to build detailed profiles of health-conscious customers, enabling it to enhance merchandising and send personalized offers at the time of visits to various locations.

In addition, ways are being researched of providing information personalized to consumers’ specific health issues and dietary needs. Pathways of “gamifying” the experience through incentives for healthy shopping, as well as loyalty points, are being explored. Other retailers such as Kroger and Heinen are offering telehealth and in-person appointments, with qualified dietitians providing proprietary panels and in-depth dietary advice.
