Country-music legend Willie Nelson celebrated his 86th birthday on April 29, 2019. In the days leading up to the occasion, the singer-songwriter announced the release of a new album, Ride Me Back Home. The name of the album and its corresponding title track refer to Nelson’s love of horses, particularly the more than 60 he has rescued and keeps on his property outside of Austin, Texas.
For Nelson, Ride Me Back Home completes of a trilogy of mortality-themed albums that began with 2017’s God’s Problem Child and continued with 2018’s Last Man Standing. According to longtime collaborator Buddy Cannon, who produced the new album and co-wrote three of its 11 songs, Ride Me Back Home differs from the previous two releases in that empathy find its way into the material.
Along with original songs, Ride Me Back Home features covers of Guy Clark, Billy Joel, and other artists. Nelson will support the album by headlining the 2019 Outlaw Music Festival, which runs into September.
