Running is a great exercise and for some people it comprises much of their workout regime. However, for those who want to become faster, stronger runners and build up other muscles, cross-training is essential. Cross-training refers to the act of working muscles that do not get used during running. For runners, good cross-training activities include swimming, cycling, and even walking.

Strength training is another popular cross-training option. As running is a unilateral movement, runners should take care to add unilateral weightlifting moves, such as lunges, but also will want to incorporate moves that strength the hips and glutes.

Cross-training will help runners improve their cardio, decrease recovery time, and strengthen muscles. It will also help them become better runners and decrease risk of injury.
